East End Community School
First LEED Certified Public School (LEED Silver)
Details.
Ledgewood Construction served as general contractor for Portland’s East End Community School, earning an unprecedented third consecutive Build Maine Award and delivering the state’s first LEED Certified public school in the process. Hired by the City of Portland to build the 74,000-s.f. school — the city’s first new school in 30 years.
Ledgewood utilized environmentally friendly building materials and techniques, including using locally sourced drywall and particle board with the highest recycled content, installing reclaimed wood, steel and plastic materials, and employing low- and zero-VOC paints and adhesives. The school also has an innovative green roof that helps filter storm water runoff, produces oxygen, dampens noise, and helps to insulate the building. The project is a Merit Building Award-winner and a member of the Maine Public Utilities Commission’s High Performance Schools program.
