Martin’s Point Marine Hospital

New updates to this 1850s-era building brings it back to life.

Details.

Ledgewood Construction managed construction and preservation work of Portland’s historic Marine Hospital on Martin’s Point. The project, done with Historic Preservation Commission oversight, renovated the original 1850’s-era three-story, 29,400-s.f. hospital for administrative use, including offices, conference areas and an employee gym.

As with restoring any building dating back to the 1850’s, this project was not without its challenges. Ledgewood managed the varying and talented subcontractors and artisans who, over many months, brought the tired hospital on the hill back to its original glory. The meticulous cast iron, window and masonry work was central to adequately and fully restoring this treasure of Portland’s history. Maine Preservation honored the project team for its efforts with a Statewide Historic Preservation Honor Award.

The project marked a return to the Martin’s Point campus for Ledgewood, who previously completed an addition to the Health Care Clinic Building.
